What lands on the paper
Six squares to a batch by default, two across a page, at a scale that leaves room to write four small candidate digits into a cell and still read the cage target in its corner. That corner number is the reason these print larger than a sudoku of the same side would: a cage cue crammed against a cell border is unreadable at the size most people print at.
The answers follow on their own pages rather than sitting beside the boards. A sheet carrying a puzzle and its solution within eye-shot is not a printable puzzle, it is a spoiler with extra steps, and it makes the sheet useless for handing to somebody else.
Nothing on the page is an image. Every board is drawn as a real table by the same renderer that draws the one you play on, so it comes out at whatever resolution the printer runs at and stays crisp instead of turning into a grey approximation. On paper the cage outlines go to solid black rather than the screen’s softer line, because a cage boundary that reads as a shade darker on a monitor disappears entirely in economy mode.
Picking a side and a level for paper
For a classroom or a waiting room, 4×4 easy is almost always right. It fits eight to a double-sided sheet, takes two or three minutes each, and needs nothing beyond copying the printed cages in and filling the last gap in each line — which can be explained in about a minute, or handed over as the technique page if you would rather not do the explaining.
For a long journey, 6×6 or 7×7 at medium is the sweet spot. Large enough to take real time, small enough that the arithmetic stays comfortably mental, and singles-level difficulty keeps a board moving without demanding a full grid of candidate marks in every cell.
Print hard and expert at 6×6 or larger. A 4×4 expert exists and is generated honestly, but sixteen cells do not give the cage-interaction argument much to work with, and the result tends to be one sharp moment surrounded by ordinary filling-in. This puzzle rewards space in the way a crossword does.
A printed square is proved like any other
Printed boards come from the same generator as the ones on screen and are held to the same standard: exactly one grid satisfies the cages, and it is reachable by argument at the level printed beside it. There is no second, sloppier path for paper.
That matters more on paper than anywhere else, because paper has no undo. A printed board with two answers wastes an afternoon and gives you no way to discover that the board was at fault rather than you — and on this puzzle, unlike most, the wrong answer will satisfy every cage you check.
Common questions
Are the printable calcudoku free?
Yes, every side and every level, with no cap on how many you print and no account to make. The answer pages are included unless you switch them off.
How large are the printed squares?
Two to a page at every side, laid out for A4 and US Letter without being scaled down to fit, which is what keeps the cells big enough for pencil marks and the cage cues legible.
Can I hand out the squares without the answers?
They are already split: the squares come first and the answers follow on pages of their own, so handing over the front sheets and keeping the back ones is all it takes.
